This October I did something that I have never done before: I participated in the CIBC Run for the Cure held in Burlington, Ontario in support of breast cancer research. Until now, I have always considered myself blessed in that no one close to me has been touched by breast cancer to date — knock on wood.
But this year was different.
Like the other participants in this year’s event, I now had a personal connection to the disease. I was there because there are people I know and care about on the FCT team fighting this challenging condition. I joined 75 other FCT employees who came out to support their colleagues who are bravely fighting the disease, or in the case of our Hamilton office team, to remember a colleague who passed away after losing her battle with breast cancer.
The whole experience was very moving. In particular, being able to see how meaningful it was to my colleagues to receive the support of their FCT family at the Run, first hand, meant a lot. And I am really proud of our teams: together we raised more than $15,000 for The Cure. But perhaps more importantly, I believe that by participating in the Run we are telling all those suffering from breast cancer that they are not in this battle alone.
So if you haven’t taken part before, try on some pink hair, dust off your running or walking shoes and register for the Run next year. You will be happy that you did and will have a great time while helping others. I have posted a few photos from the event showing the character and commitment of our dedicated FCT family. I hope to be in position to participate for many years to come alongside my fellow FCT colleagues, until that day when breast cancer is only a distant memory….
