Since 2015, FCT has been proudly running a scholarship program to help deserving youth across Canada offset some of the financial challenges that come with attending college or university. The scholarship was named after The Honourable William G. Davis, 18th Premier of Ontario and current FCT board chairman, whose passion for education contributed to his work in building Ontario’s community college system.
This year, we partnered with Home Suite Hope (HSH), an organization that unites a network of vital support services for single mothers and their children, supporting them on their journey from poverty to stability. The partnership allowed us to make a greater impact in the community by opening up the scholarship to mothers who are single, at-risk or experiencing homelessness, who are currently enrolled in HSH programs, and their children.
Our scholarship recipient this year is an ambitious young man, Geoffrey Fornoles. Though he and his mother went through hard times over the past year, dealing with health issues in addition to almost experiencing homeless, he never lost sight of his end goal. While his circumstances had an impact on his grades, he’s determined to improve them this year and work hard to achieve his dream.
Geoffrey says, “My dream job is to be a software developer. I have wanted to work with computers since I was a kid. I’m currently in grade 13 to improve my marks in order to get into a computer science course in Sheridan and get a degree. As soon as I heard about this scholarship, I decided to take the chance to help myself focus on my studies instead of focusing on finding money to pay my tuition.”
Congratulations again, Geoffrey. We’re rooting for you!
