“Stop the Fraudsters” game challenges legal and lending professionals to recognize warning signs and make more secure and informed decisions

OAKVILLE, ON – October 1, 2026 – A fraudulent email, altered payment instruction, or compromised identity can appear legitimate at first glance. This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, FCT has launched Stop the Fraudsters, an interactive game designed to help legal and lending professionals test their ability to recognize potential fraud and cybersecurity warning signs within real estate transactions.

“As real estate transactions become increasingly digital, fraudsters have more opportunities to make communications and requests appear credible or urgent,” said Michael LeBlanc, CEO at FCT. “Increasing awareness across the industry is critical to helping protect customers and maintaining trust throughout the transaction.”

The Stop the Fraudsters game places participants in scenarios inspired by situations that can arise during a transaction, and challenges them to determine what may be legitimate – and what deserves a closer look. The experience reinforces practical behaviours such as pausing before responding, independently verifying unusual requests, and following established processes when handling sensitive information or funds.

“One of the biggest misconceptions in cybersecurity is that fraud is always obvious. In reality, a changed email address, an unexpected payment instruction, or a sense of urgency may be the only warning signs," said Cory Woods, Chief Information Security Officer at FCT. “FCT's new Stop the Fraudsters game for Cybersecurity Awareness Month challenges legal and lending professionals to identify fraud indicators hidden within real-world transaction scenarios. Technology matters, but so do the decisions we make every day. Knowing when to pause, question, and verify can make an important difference.”

The game is a central part of FCT’s 2026 Cybersecurity Awareness Month campaign, Spot It. Stop It. Secure It. The education-first campaign is designed to help legal, lending, and real estate professionals recognize cyber risks, take practical action, and strengthen the practices that support more secure real estate transactions.

Throughout October, FCT will share additional cybersecurity resources and expert perspectives, including practical checklists, educational articles, and an updated Cybersecurity Resource Guide. The campaign will also explore how secure processes, identity verification, and title insurance can work together as part of a layered approach to protecting real estate transactions.
